About
Rehumanisation and the Rehumanisation Society.
What is Rehumanisation?
A process for restoring human qualities and dignity to individuals or groups who have been dehumanised or treated as less than human. It is a concept that is often discussed in the context of social justice, psychology and ethics, especially in regard to marginalised or oppressed groups.
It involves recognising and affirming the inherent worth of all individuals and fostering empathy to promote understanding and respect between different groups.
The process is used as a stepping stone in reconciliation between groups, particularly in post-conflict or following the identification of systemic injustices.
What are Human Qualities?
These include the ability to empathise, have compassion, be kind, act with integrity and respect. The term relates to a wide range of human behaviour which is often categorised as character traits.
Rehumanisation in the context of the Rehumanisation Society.
Despite being more closely connected than at any time in our history, it can feel as though we are becoming ever further divided. The rise of technologies such as Social Media have aided misinformation, eroded empathy, compassion and kindness, and amplified polarisation.
Meanwhile the effects spill into the real world as we see the rise in tension and indeed violence, with particular tensions across complex subject matter such as immigration being exploited for personal and political gain and met with overly simplistic arguments on both sides.
We believe that rehumanising occurs when we remove the labels that detract from our common connection as human beings, listen to different points of view and hear peoples concerns, discuss issues calmly and openly, accepting that individual perspectives matter.
Our aim is to consider these topics, which make up some of the greatest challenges humans face today, and offer well thought out and practical approaches to facing and solving these problems.
